The latest national public health survey from the Public Health Agency of Sweden presents a multifaceted picture of Swedes’ health. While the majority of the population perceives their health as good or very good, a significant portion of adults report struggles with mental health issues, sleep disturbances, and stress. What does this mean for our society – and what can we do to reverse the negative trends?
A Positive Starting Point
It is encouraging that 75 percent of respondents consider their health to be good or very good. This reflects successes in public health policies, healthcare access, and Sweden’s generally high standard of living. Factors such as physical activity, dietary habits, and social support likely contribute to this positive outcome.
However, the report also highlights disparities in health across society. People with lower education levels and incomes tend to experience poorer health, underscoring the importance of equitable initiatives to reach the entire population.
Challenges: Mental Health and Sleep Disorders
A darker side of the statistics reveals that 34 percent of Swedes report problems with anxiety, worry, or distress. Many also suffer from sleep issues – a trend that has become increasingly common with the rise of digitalization and demanding work environments.
Mental health issues affect not only individuals but also the broader economy. Sick leave, reduced productivity, and increased strain on healthcare services are just some of the consequences. Young people and women are particularly vulnerable groups, raising questions about how to create safe and supportive environments for them.

What Can Be Done?
Beyond Holistal’s efforts, we see several areas where society can act:
1. Promote Mental Health in Schools and Workplaces. Preventive measures, such as introducing mental health as a subject in schools and workplace programs for stress management, can make a significant difference.
2. Invest in Health Equity. Resources must be directed toward the most vulnerable groups to ensure that everyone, regardless of background, has the same opportunities for good health.
3. Highlight the Role of Sleep in Public Health. Sleep hygiene should receive increased attention in both healthcare and societal planning. Initiatives like digital detoxes at work or public campaigns on the importance of sleep can help break negative patterns.
Summary: Together for Sustainable Health
Public health in Sweden is strong in many ways, but the challenges highlighted in the Public Health Agency’s survey cannot be ignored. To maintain high levels of well-being, we must act now – focusing on both individual needs and the structural changes required.
Health is more than the absence of illness; it is a foundation for a meaningful and productive life. By investing in preventive measures, equity, and increased awareness, we can create a healthier and more sustainable Sweden for everyone.
